My mission is to have this day be about everyone we knew and know personally and in our bowls community that have passed or are currently battling Brain Cancer or Dementia.
People battling Brain Cancer and Dementia currently fight a losing battle, it is one that does not stop and does not take breaks. Sometimes all we can do as spectators to this disease is show support by donating to research.
Hopefully one day this round can play a huge part in the prevention and cure of these diseases.
The idea of The Brain Awareness Round was developed after my mother, Patricia was diagnosed with terminal Brain Cancer. I wanted to do something, I wanted to feel like I was helping because with any type of cancer there is not much for a family member or friend to do other than support and watch their family member/friend go on the fight for their life.
After my mother's second brain surgery I came up with the idea of doing something in conjunction with my bowling club, Lilydale Bowling Club. I wanted to raise funds during a Pennant game and hold a family day that would raise awareness and funds that would go toward Brain Cancer Research.
Throughout my research and organisation of the two day event I found out that the prognosis and treatments for brain cancer had not changed for over 30 years, which all came down to funding struggles. Which is unfathomable considering the brain is the one organ the body cannot regenerate, be transplanted or the body can live without.
In conjunction with my mother the name Head Above the Rest was born. This fundraiser originally targeted all funds toward Brain Cancer Research and as the fundraiser has grown and involved many others in the Lawn Bowling Community it has also evolved to include Dementia Australia.
Both Brain Cancer and Dementia affect many of our bowling community, our friends and families. If you have been a member of any bowling club you would have known at least one person with one of these diseases.
As this fundraiser evolves and grows I truly believe it can become a staple and large contributor toward Brain Cancer and Dementia Research.
